Twisted-Pair-cables Overview Fire protection: flame resistance, smoke-free, halogen-free Particularly in large installations, it is important that attention is paid to the needs of fire protection. There are three important must– haves for the cable sheath and wire insulation. These properties are flame resistance, low-smoke and zero halogen. Flame resistance: – A cable is classified as flame retardant in accordance with IEC 60332, if it does not or only a specified short piece continues to burn, while the rest of the cable is set on fire for a long time. Smoke poverty: – The idea is that in case of fire not too much smoke may be released. To test the smoke poverty according to IEC 61034 cable pieces are placed in a chamber for a long time under fire and the light transmittance of the resulting smoke measured by photocell inside the chamber. Halogen-free: – The measurement of halogen-free is prescribed in IEC 60754. Halogens in the material on the one hand lead to combustion toxic fumes and on the other hand to the formation of corrosive or caustic acids. LS0H: – There is often also the name Low Smoke Zero Halogen (LSZH or LS0H) for the classification of cable material. In this case, although reference is made to smoke and zero halogen poverty, but not on the flame resistance.
